Toyota Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Buyer's Guide

Mass Air Flow Sensors (MAF) are important electronic components in every modern engine. They measure the volume of air entering the engine and send it to the ECU. If they become faulty, they can cause a lot of issues.

In this MAF sensor buyer’s guide, we cover what these issues are, how to diagnose them, and how to replace the MAF sensor if it is faulty. Read on for the answers to:

What Is A MAF Sensor, And What Does It Do?

Your car’s MAF sensor is a core part of your vehicle's engine management system. It's a small device that is found between the air intake and throttle body. Its job is to:

  • Measures air volume going to the engine
  • Send information to the ECU
  • Allow ECU to determine precise air/fuel mixture

This data is sent to the engine control unit (ECU) so it can calculate the optimum air/fuel mixture. If it fails, the car will run poorly and use excessive fuel. Sometimes, it will stop running altogether. For more information on this topic, read our comprehensive article on what a MAF sensor is and why it’s so important here.

How To Diagnose And Troubleshoot A Failing MAF Sensor

If you notice the following issues, it may be time for a new MAF sensor:

  • Poor fuel efficiency and rough idling
  • Check engine warning light is on
  • Hesitation when accelerating and a lack of power

To ensure that your MAF sensor is the cause of these issues you should do the following diagnostic checks:

  • Check MAF sensor for visual damage – broken wiring or dirt on the sensor can often cause problems
  • Use an OBDII scanner to check if any relevant error codes pop up
  • Use a multimeter to see whether the sensor has any electrical issues

Read our guide here for a more comprehensive dive into diagnosing and troubleshooting the MAF sensor.

Are OEM Toyota MAF Sensors Better Than Aftermarket?

OEM toyota maf sensors

OEM MAF Sensors Features:

  • Come with a manufacturer warranty
  • Are guaranteed to fit right and work perfectly
  • Are made from high-quality materials that last

Aftermarket MAF Sensors Features:

  • Are generic designs that may not work right
  • Are often made from inferior-quality materials
  • Rarely come with a decent warranty

You may consider aftermarket MAF sensors because they often look similar to an OEM part. And sometimes they have a lower price. You don’t see the inferior material quality, lack of a decent warranty, and the generic design.

OEM MAF sensors come with a manufacturer's warranty and are guaranteed to fit right and work perfectly. This makes them the obvious choice. All our OEM parts are sold at wholesale prices, too.
