What Is a Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor?

The MAF sensor is an integral part of your vehicle's engine management system. It's a small device that measures the amount of air entering the engine. This data is crucial for the engine control unit (ECU) to calculate the precise amount of fuel needed for efficient combustion.

  • Measures air volume entering the engine
  • Relays information to the ECU
  • ECU uses the information to determine how much fuel to inject
  • Ensures that the engine receives the precise amount of fuel to attain the correct air/fuel mixture

The MAF sensor goes by many names. If you hear someone talking about an air mass meter, hot film air flow meter, or air mass meter, it’s all one and the same.

Where Is The MAF And What Does It Look Like?

  • Located between the air filter and the throttle body
  • Circular plastic housing with an electronic plug on the outside
  • Has a honeycomb-like structure inside the housing

The MAF sensor is located between the air filter housing and the throttle body. There are many types of MAFs out there, but the vast majority look like plastic cylinders with a wiring plug on their side. This plug is the visible part of the sensor, which extends into the plastic housing.

Older designs would have a large aluminum housing with a rectangular plastic box on the top.

How Has MAF Technology Advanced?

Early MAF sensors were heavy and cumbersome. Most had a large aluminum body that plugged into the piping between the air filter and throttle body. The electronic component was mounted on the top of the aluminum housing.

During the 1980s, the MAF sensor housing became more compact and was made from plastic. Hot-wire air flow technology gave way to more advanced hot-film air-flow meters. Cold wire and Karman sensor technology was also introduced.

By the early 2000s MAF sensors had become even more compact, and some transmitted their data digitally to the ECU. Modern MAF designs now incorporate humidity and oxygen sensors, allowing for an even more precise air/fuel mixture.
