Built on a modified TNGA-K platform specifically designed for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), it will be assembled at Toyota’s flagship plant in Georgetown, Kentucky. This move makes it the first Toyota EV manufactured in the United States, utilizing batteries sourced from a new facility in North Carolina. Here are the details on the launch:

What’s Different: Gas vs. EV
The 2027 model is a ground-up EV redesign. While the outgoing model relied on a 265-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, the new EV delivers up to 338 horsepower in its dual-motor AWD configuration. Physically, the EV is wider and has a significantly longer wheelbase (120.1 inches) to accommodate the battery, resulting in a more planted, aerodynamic stance with flush door handles and hammerhead LED lighting.
Every major shift comes with some changes. Firstly, there is a significant performance boost (338 hp vs 265 hp) and the inclusion of Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, which allows the car to power external devices or even your home during an emergency. The new Highlander will also feature a more modern, tech-forward cabin with a standard 14.0-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver display. However, despite having a longer wheelbase, cargo space behind the third row is slightly reduced (15.9 cu-ft versus 16 cu-ft) compared to the outgoing gas model. And there is about 2.8 cu-ft less cargo space behind the second row. The additional cost of the EV componentry will also push MSRP pricing up.
