A Pontoon Boat and Other Surprising Things a Toyota Sienna Can Tow
When one thinks of a minivan, towing capability doesn’t typically come to mind. Many view minivans as just grocery getters and kid haulers, but that couldn't be farther from the truth.
You can do so much more with your Toyota Sienna. Did you know that it has enough power to tow a pontoon boat to the lake? The average pontoon boat weighs 2,200 pounds, which falls within the Sienna's towing capacity. You can tow jet skis and some smaller speedboats, too.

With a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, your Sienna gives a Toyota Tacoma (also with a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds) a run for its money. So what are some other things your Sienna can tow?
Yes, your minivan can haul this! Photo credit: Virginia State Parks
A typical horse weighs about 1,000 pounds. A one-horse trailer weighs less than 2,000 pounds. That’s a total of less than 3,000 pounds, which leaves plenty of room in your Sienna’s towing capacity for riding accessories.
Another Car Out of a Ditch
Got a buddy whose sedan is stranded in a ditch? Sienna come to the rescue! Sedans usually weigh less than 3,500 pounds. For example, a Camry’s curb weight falls between 3,200 and 3,500 pounds, meaning you could hitch a stranded sedan to your properly equipped Sienna and pull that sucker out in no time. Take that, minivan haters.
An Enclosed Trailer
You can haul so much cargo in an enclosed trailer with your Sienna. An average 6x12 enclosed trailer weighs about 1,200 pounds empty. That means you can pull just over a ton of cargo with it. If you own a Sienna, moving house will be a piece of cake.

Towing Safety Tips
Once you get your Sienna ready for towing, it’s a good idea to enlist some good towing practices to be as safe as possible. We have a few suggestions:
- When towing a trailer, load at least 60% of the cargo weight in the front of the trailer to prevent swaying.
- To improve stability, set your tongue weight between 10% and 15% of the trailer’s total weight.
- Avoid going over 55 mph.
- As an extra precaution, install safety chains under the hitch.
- Don’t ride your brakes because they may overheat. Instead, dab them in gentle pulses when driving downhill.
- Stay at least four full seconds behind the car in front of you to allow for safe braking.
- Keep a spare tire for the trailer in the trunk.
