Toyota’s Prius hybrid remains the best-selling vehicle in California for the second year in a row. More cars and trucks are sold there than anywhere in the U.S. This continues Toyota’s remarkable sales run with the Prius.

Toyota Prius King in California - Top Selling Hybrid

The Toyota Prius is the king of the hybrids in California. This region is the largest automotive market in the U.S.

The California Auto Outlook report says that the four-model Prius lineup accounted for 68,728 sales. This put it ahead of the Honda Civic.

This report is big for automakers gauging how the rest of the country will buy their products. With California’s stringent emission rules, hybrids sell more there than elsewhere and the success/failure of a hybrid product foreshadows future results for many automakers.

Toyota’s Prius line, the world’s top-selling hybrid, includes the main hatchback, the v wagon, c subcompact, and a plug-in electric version.

Toyota said Wednesday that it’s recalling about 1.9 million Prius models worldwide to fix a software flaw that could cause the cars to lose power or stall.

An Autonews.com story says that the “combined sales of autos powered partially or wholly by electricity accounted for 9.3 percent of California sales last year, according to the report.

By comparison, the U.S. average for hybrid and rechargeable autos was only 3.82 percent, based on data compiled by HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates.”

This small glitch will not likely slow down sales and is just another example of Toyota’s preventative recall strategy.
