Teen Driving Safety Tips

So your teen just got their driver’s license and they’re asking to drive the Toyota.

As a parent, it’s important to remind them to drive safely before you give them the keys.

Every year, countless teens die in traffic accidents.  Between 2000 and 2006, more than 19,000 teens died in motor vehicle accidents.

To help keep your teen safe, you need to follow the tips below.

  • Continue teaching them: Just because they got their driver’s license doesn’t mean, they should always drive alone.  Join your teen in the car from time to time when they drive.  Be sure to stress the importance of following traffic laws.
  • Limit teenage passengers: Don’t let your teen go driving around with friends and siblings.  Often a teen can become distracted when driving with friends.  This can lead to an accident.
  • Avoid night driving: If it’s dark outside, don’t let your teen drive.  Most car accidents involving teens take place on a weekend night.
  • Be an example: If you want your teen to obey the traffic laws, you need to set a good example when you’re driving.
  • Limit cell phone use: It doesn’t matter if you’re a teen or an adult, talking on your cell phone while driving is dangerous.  You need to stress that point with your teen.

Following these tips will help to keep your teen safe.  It’s also important that your family’s vehicles get regular maintenance inspections.
